What Should I Do If My MOT Has Been Extended?

The Coronavirus outbreak is impacting virtually every aspect of life around the globe with unprecedented limits on where and how people can meet during the continuing pandemic. The virus, also known as COVID-19, has claimed thousands of lives so far.

As a result, on March 23 prime minister Boris Johnson introduced measures in a bid to reduce the infection rate. The impact of the COVID-19 crisis is having a tangible effect on vehicle owners too. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many of us are wondering what to do about our car MOT, as temporary exemption has been enabled for people to shop for necessities or key workers to carry on travelling to their workplace.

If your MOT test has been extended, do not worry. At DCM Tyres, we have an MOT centre in Shaftesbury and can give you all the right advice you need and point you in the right direction.

Has My MOT Been Extended?

If your MOT was due on or after 30th March 2020, this means it will be extended by six months. The UK government have made this MOT extension eligible to cars, vans and motorcycles, including those that were due their first MOT on or before this date.

With the MOT extension, this means all eligible vehicles will hold a valid MOT certificate for a further six months. Motorists can still renew their tax and insurance is still valid.

Despite your car MOT being extended, you must ensure that your vehicle remains safe to drive.

What Should I Do Next?

If you realise that your MOT will be eligible for extension, here are the next steps that you should take:

  • Check that your MOT has been extended three days before  itis due to expire. This can be checked on the gov.uk website.

  • If your MOT expiry date has not been extended, send an email to covid19mot@dvsa.gov.uk to arrange extension. Make sure you include your vehicle registration and your original MOT expiry date.
